I am only partway through this book now, but I am enjoying it very much. I spent many weeks of my childhood every year on the islands in the Puget Sound area, and her writing puts me right on the island. To those who have never been there, her detailed descriptions of the trees, plants, water, effects of the tides, the scent of the air, and the culture of the people who live there might seem tedious, but I enjoy books with a strong sense of place even if I've never been there. She does a terrific job of illustrating the frustration of raising teenaged girls no matter where you live. I'm also enjoying learning about what life was like in that region during WW II.Product details

Onions in the Stew (Audible Audio Edition) Betty MacDonald Heather Henderson Post Hypnotic Press Inc Books Reviews
Betty MacDonald's sense of humor never fails to make me laugh. I love her books. Definitely of it's time and place. A feel of time travel with humor.
This was a former library book, with library binding, first edition, really good condition. Betty MacDonald tells of her WWII years living on Vashon Island in Puget Sound, Washington. Interesting read, especially because I had recently visited neighboring islands. MacDonald creates a fun read that gives the reader an real idea of what it was like to live on a island during the period.
Onions In The Stew is the fourth Betty MacDonald book voiced by the amazing Heather Henderson. Henderson's take on all of Betty's work is superb, perhaps this book especially. She has settled so beautifully into MacDonald's tone and cadence, and listening is a real treat. I highly recommend all four Betty MacDonald books voiced by Heather Henderson for Post-Hypnotic Press!
I liked Betty MacDonald's book. Her writing reminds me of Erma Bombeck. I was so impressed by the blurb at the end of the book, that I ordered her 3 earlier books. The blurb mentioned her writing with humor of all her adversities, and mentioned that she died of cancer at age 49, still joking up to the end.
It is wonderful to see Betty MacDonald's books back in print again. They are delightful, witty memoirs of her life in backwoods Washington State, in the mid 1940s.
Her best book is The Egg and I. It was made into a movie, and inspired the Ma and Pa Kettle series. Apparently, those were her neighbors in real life!
The recent paperbacks are well produced on quality stock.
This book is one of my all-time favorites, I've read it a couple of times in the past, and was excited to get a kindle version so I could carry it with me. I was very disappointed that the formatting was so terrible. The page margins and paragraph indentations were screwed up and the text did not flow from page to page.
That all said, I love this book (a simple narrative of a woman writer's family life on Vashon island in the 1950s)so much that I struggled through the ghastly layout problems and read it yet again. If you like this sort of book I also recommend Betty MacDonald's The Plague and I, The Egg and I, and perhaps my favorite; Anybody Can Do Anything.
Until they get this formatting problem straightened out however, I'd look for them in paper or hardback.

Betty MacDonald's fourth and final book, written about her days on living on Vashon Island in Washington state, with her two daughters and her second husband.
Not as rollicking and raw as "The Egg and I"; a good book detailing her life and the publication of "The Egg and I."
She only wrote the four novels/pseudo-autobiographies, BUT, she did write several children's books, which are good as well, if you're interested.
