Burnett, as usual is a master story teller. Like most of her stories I have read, it is set in a setting that she has issue with. The difficulty with this story, and the reason I gave it a 4. Instead of a five is because it is difficult to understand the dialect many of the characters speak.Product details

That Lass O' Lowrie [New York1877] Frances Hodgson Burnett 0884587346672 Books Reviews
A love story set in a mining town where there is much poverty and working conditions at the mine are dangerously unsafe. There are two couples in the story. Anise the ministers daughter and Joan a local who works in tbe mine and lives with an abusive father.Grace is an assistant to Anice's father who works hard to provide educational and social services to the town's inhabitants. Derrick is a mine engineer working to improve conditions for the miners. Most of the story revolves around Derrick and Joan. The reader is left unsure as to the outcome of the relationship between Grace and Anise although the four are closely intertwined. There is yet another couple in the story a sort of fatal attraction that ends sadly. Not one of Burnett's best but provides a glimpse of the economic and social barriers that impeded relationships between men and women on the different levels.
its to victorian writing for me. I know it was written in victorian times there for its going to have victorian writing but dear lord I was 70 pages in and still had no idea what was going on. and when I say 70 pages in I mean 70 pages on the Fire with the medium print size in times new roman font. I gave up. Probably why she was never known for anything but her childrens books because her adult books really didn't stand the test of time.
Nice to explore new-to-me story by a favorite author. Well written, interesting characters and setting. Although set in a different part of England, the conditions described in both this and "The Secret Garden" are true to life and accurate from what I understand of that era. Great read!
